On Thursday, February 12, 2015, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) will be presenting a Video Session: SURGICAL SURPRISES, ACCIDENTS & COMPLICATIONS: To Err is Human, To Correct is Master Surgeon – Now How the ##!!** Do I Get Out of This?

​​This session will take place during the EuroAmerican MultiSpecialty Summit VII to be held in Orlando, Florida, USA,February 11-14, 2015. Submit your video for a chance to be included in this popular interactive session!​

The Surgical Surprises session aims to highlight unexpected events occurring during surgery, the decision process of how to remedy the accident/occurrence, and the video demonstration of the event and its correction. The strength of this program is the concurrent critique/discussion by expert surgeons, urologists and gynecologists on the panel, with the presenter’s interaction. This is NOT a forum to show how you perform a particular procedure, neither is this a lecture by the presenter; those types of submissions will be rejected. Events of interest to the multispecialty audience will be prioritized.

Please arrange your video and submission notes by:

1. Brief history and indication for surgery
2. Surgery and surprise event
3. Remedy of the accident/surprise
4. Follow-up if appropriate (e.g. IVP)

The total video length should be between 2-5 minutes. There should be no narration or music. The moderator will decide the stop points on the video and lead the discussion.

To submit a video that has been formatted as described above, please use the steps outlined below:

All persons whose videos are accepted for inclusion must be paid registrants and must be present at the session. It is important that those whose videos are presented during the session are present in order to clarify issues and answer questions. Please keep in mind that video presentation will be at the discretion of the panel, Director, and Co-Director. There may not be an opportunity to show all videos since this will be an interactive session and discussion and participation from the audience is unpredictable. Those submitting videos must be present at the session in order for it to be shown.

A new program by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) is offering a fellowship that will teach the latest surgical techniques and skills in advanced endoscopy and reproductive surgery, working with the inventor of the video-laparoscopic method, Dr. Camran Nezhat.

The one-to-two year post graduate fellowship will begin July, 2015, and will focus on the treatment of benign gynecological disorders such as endometriosis, leiomyomas, pelvic pain and infertility. It will provide comprehensive team management in advanced laparoscopy, robotic surgery, operative hysteroscopy, cystoscopy and proctoscopy.

“The program is highly devoted to treating women with endometriosis and is part of a larger referral center for the most complicated cases involving the bowel, bladder, ureter, diaphragm, and lungs,” says Dr. Camran Nezhat, the program director. “Because this is an SLS fellowship, there is a strong emphasis on a multispecialty approach. These surgeries are often performed with a team of gynecologists, colorectal and thoracic surgeons.”

The surgical experience offered to each fellow will include an understanding and treatment of advanced-stage endometriosis, both laparoscopically, with and without robotic assistance. This involves ovarian, peritoneal, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and other sites of endometriosis. For leiomyoma, the laparoscopic-assisted myomectomy technique is also taught. Each fellow will learn:

• The role of laparoscopic hysterectomy, for both the definitive treatment of endometriosis and/or management of large fibroid uteri.
• Operative hysteroscopy — a common procedure in the program, used to treat uterine anomalies, fibroids, polyps, septums, tubal obstruction and adhesions.
• The disciplines of approaching and treating infertility pathology, ovarian pathology and interstitial cystitis.
• Proficiency in cystoscopy, ureteral stent placement, proctoscopy, pelvic ultrasonography and saline infusion sonohysterography.

“It has been more than 30 years since laparoscopy in gynecology has been introduced, and we have expanded it from diagnosis and tubal sterilization to more sophisticated operations,” says Dr. Paul Wetter, chairman of SLS. “Yet despite rapidly improving technology, there remains a significant learning curve for new surgeons. We want to contribute to changing that.”

“One of the unique features of this program is the availability of laparoscopic and hysteroscopic virtual reality simulators that provide force feedback (haptics), says says Dr. LeRoy Heinrichs, professor emeritus at Stanford University Medical Center. “This helps to improve surgical skills while also providing valuable epistemological insights to improve the way surgery is taught and learned.”

Redan, 54, is a general surgeon and medical director of minimally invasive surgery at Florida Hospital-Celebration Health in Kissimmee. He will be the Miami-based organization’s 22nd president, replacing Dr. Robert Sweet, a urologic surgeon.

During his year-long term at the society’s helm, Redan said he plans to address the cost-effectiveness of surgeries in the U.S. and explore the potential benefits the laparoscopic surgery community can gain from the increased use of telemedicine technologies.

Redan, who is also an associate professor of surgery at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, took office in late October.
