Dr. Jay Redan, Appointed 22nd President of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons

October 6, 2014 (Miami, FL) — The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), an organization focused on multi-specialty minimally invasive surgery, chose Dr. Jay A. Redan, a general surgeon from Florida Hospital-Celebration Health and a veteran of Desert Storm, to become its 22nd president. Dr. Redan is the medical director of minimally invasive surgery at Florida Hospital Celebration Health and an associate professor of surgery, University of Central Florida College Of Medicine.

The first of two themes of Dr. Redan’s presidential year is examining health care costs in America. “As we discuss many different areas of medicine, one issue transcends many others in 2014, and that is the current cost of surgery,” Dr. Redan said. “How we spend our dollars says a lot about our priorities. The number one priority is the health of the patient. We have a duty to make sure care is not compromised and that patients have access to the best technology available, whether it be in healthcare in general or in minimally invasive surgery.”

The new president officially began his position at the close of “minimally invasive surgery week,” the SLS annual conference on September 13, 2014.

“We are very happy to have Dr. Redan as the new president of SLS,” said Dr. Paul Wetter, chairman of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. “We look forward to a year of fascinating discussions about developments in medical technologies, the cost of medicine, surgical training, and how we can serve our membership in even better ways.”

Dr. Redan received his medical degree and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey Medical School. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve during Operation Desert Storm and in the U.S. Army National Guard, retiring in 1999 with the rank of Major.

“Telemedicine,” which is the remote diagnosis and/or treatment of patients by means of telecommunications technology, is Dr. Redan’s second priority. “It is imperative for the future of surgery and medicine as a whole,” he says. “Physician access to patients in both urban and rural settings needs improvement. Educators’ access to students and fellow physicians would also benefit from this technology.”

The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), a 501(c)(3) organization, is the nation’s leading group of multi-specialty surgeons, including general surgery, urology, OB-GYN and others, SLS advocates for minimally invasive surgery and improved surgical outcomes for all these specialties. It is a voluntary, nonprofit membership organization of over 6,000 surgeons. www.sls.org
